ACADEMIC GAMES FROM U.S. NATIONAL PARK SERVICE--FUN AND FREE:)

This site is one that your students will love. It is a great supplement especially for your ELLs where they can build their academic vocabulary base. In fact, this is a site they could go to AFTER completing a computer subject specific assignment. Having additional approved websites for students to use in the last 10 minutes before the bell is a must. If not, they waste their time. Every minute of instruction needs to be devoted to helping them boost their knowledge of academic vocabulary/content while developing their English language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

Here students have their choice of one of 7 areas to work on: people, history, nature, puzzles, science, parks, and animals. Though geared to elementary for the most part, ELLs at upper grade levels would benefit from them as well since each topic offers them repeated practice in reading academic vocabulary in context. Further, students can pick the level of difficulty with a simple click. If students wish to keep track of their progress, they can create a free account where their scores will be readily accessible if needed.
