New Approach To Closing the Achievement Gap For ELLs

Canada is dealing with an explosion of ELLs in their schools.  These ELLs come to school with the same issues many of the ELLs face in the U.S.--having to work after school, coming with varying levels of academic success from their home countries, not living with parents, struggling to not only acquire English but stay afloat in their academic classes, etc.

This clip highlights a team effort to support new arrivals - CLOSING THE ACADEMIC GAP FOR ELLS. Staff collaboration and follow-up lay the foundation for ensuring that newcomers feel welcome and safe in their new learning environment.  This concern extends beyond the classroom covering such items as paid public transport passes, quiet places to read with help, an open door policy where ELLs can share concerns with caring teachers, etc.

This caring for the whole student as it were has led to student success and higher graduation rates.  These types of approaches allow students to achieve their dreams and truly feel part of their new country.
